Geri Charles is fairly new to the natural hair journey but has already found a new confidence in the experience.  She has also found a super-chic way to wear her hair that is great for work and play.  Alexander McQueen would surely approve and so do I… Absolutely Très chic!

Below she explains how she achieved the look……..

Tools:

  1. Water Spray Bottle
  2. Jane Carter Nourish and Shine
  3. Hair Gel (non alcohol)
  4. Bobby Pins
  5. Your fingers
  6. Soft Bristle Brush
  7. Silk Scarf
  8. Hand mirror to check out back head.

Step 1: Lightly dampen hair with water spray bottle. If my hair is feeling extra dry, I’ll spray it with Jane Carter’s leave in Conditioner which already comes in a spray bottle
Step 2: Add a little bit of Jane Carter’s Nourish and Shine or similar product to help with the dryness.
Step 3: Starting from the nape of neck, twist the back of your hair and insert bobby pins as you go along. Think of a backwards french braid but instead of braiding, your twisting.
Step 4: Once you get to the crown of my head, (which is my favorite part) play with the top and find ways to part and style it to your liking. One day, I did a triangular bump in the front (1920 Pin Up Girl inspired). Another day, I did Marie Antoinette inspired bouffant in the front.   I suggest finding a updo style that you like and try to mimic it.
Step 5: Once you’ve pinned your hair to your liking,  smooth out the sides and back with a little bit of styling gel (make sure it’s alcohol free). If I still have stranglers, I will  smooth out the sides with a soft bristle brush.
Step 6:  Last but not least, tie down your updo in a silk scarf without covering the top. You don’t want to cover the top so to avoid fattening out your fabulous bump. You don’t need to keep the scarf on for long just long enough to smooth out the sides and back of your hair style.

Things to Remember:

  • Practice makes perfect.
  • The updo may never look the way that you envisioned, but the more you practise and get comfortable with it, the better and better your style skills will become.
  • An updo can be what you make it, you can make it ultra conservative or go retro
