Alerted by my fellow #naturalhair twitter-ette, Chai_Tee ( don’t be shy, check her out), The Feminista Files has been building a strong portfolio of amazing images of people of color in advertising. Here are a few of the images. Check the full catalogue on Black is (finally) the New Black

i love it! i think it definitely helps in the way of “normalizing” natural hair among blacks/african americans and with mainstream america. i dont even think there was as much affirmation from black publications like ebony and essence during the black power movements of the 60s and 70s, when we saw the big and bigger ‘fros. a lot of folks back then stopped letting their hair grow natural b/c the colleges students who “faught the power” needed to get a job after graduation, and employers weren’t interested in an “africanized” workforce. now, i think people are more open, and are more apt to let a candidate’s qualifications speak for him/her as oppose to their physique (again, generally speaking). maybe this time the natural hair “fad” is here to stay? 🙂

laila,
thank you for your comments…..i see ALOT of examples of natural hair these days on television commercials and in advertising (people watch closely and you will see) and it does “normalize” and change perceptions. its a great thing and i love it too!

I’m so glad I found your blog, and this post! These images are great. I started to notice that more and more naturals were being featured in national advertisements and commercials. So I actually created a whole blog dedicated to it. Btw, you’re featured in today’s post (http://naturalhairinthemedia.com/2011/12/12/mondays-around-the-web-lushcoils/). I started in summer of 2011, and have found lots of sources, so far. Interestingly, the actors/models typically have the same type of hairstyle: a twistout. I haven’t seen too many naturalistas with afros, twa’s, twists, or locs (although there have been a few). I was wondering if anyone had notice this and also why this was……any ideas?

Hey there CURLfriend!
I’m SO happy you have found my blog as well. More importantly, I’m happy to know that you are collecting an archive and bringing all naturals in advertisement to the surface – LOVELY blog!!!!!!!
I’ve definitely seen MORE & MORE natural is commercials especially! With the twa’s and twistouts who are mostly women. These are car, electronics commercials not just dishwashing liquid. I think that this is because black women have the most buying power right now and are driving businesses to focus on their needs and wants. Its a beautiful thing and I’m happy to see it!
